series position or color variation may not be. Fortunately, most

clues.
The most useful clues are the product code, printed year, copyright
mark, series information and original box.
Start with the product code
An original Hallmark box normally shows an alphanumeric product code,
often beginning with letters such as QX, QXI, QXM, QGO or QXD. Search
the complete code whenever possible. A code is more precise than a
description such as “Hallmark Santa ornament” because it points to one
particular release.

Release year and
copyright year can differ
Do not assume that every molded copyright year is the retail release
year. A sculpt, character license or component may have been copyrighted
before the ornament reached stores. Some ornaments also reuse a sculpt
in a later repaint.
Treat the copyright mark as a clue, not the complete answer. Confirm
it against the product code, box and catalog listing.
Read every side of the box
The front of the box may show the title and series number. The top,
bottom or side can contain the product code, price tab, barcode, artist
information, feature description and copyright notices.
Look for:
- Exact ornament title.
- Release year.
- Product code.
- Series name and number.
- “Miniature,” “Magic,” “Limited Edition” or “Member Exclusive.”
- Battery or cord requirements.
- Original retail price and price tag.
If the ornament and box codes do not agree, the ornament may have
been placed in the wrong box.
Use physical
details to separate similar releases
Compare clothing colors, base color, printed date, character pose and
included accessories. A repaint may share the same sculpt but use a new
color palette. A miniature may look almost identical in a photograph but
be much smaller.
Size is especially helpful. Measure height, width and depth at the
widest points and compare them with the dimensions on the matching
product page.
Series numbers narrow the
search
If the box says “12th in the series,” use that phrase with the
visible subject. The series
directory can then show the surrounding years and confirm whether
the ornament fits the sequence.
Remember that complements and limited editions may resemble a series
without carrying the annual number.
Magic ornaments need
an additional check
An electrical connector can reveal the power system and approximate
era. An ornament with a light-string pigtail belongs to a different
system from one made for the Magic Cord or Keepsake Power Cord. Battery
compartments also provide useful clues.
Never test an unidentified plug by forcing it into a cord. First
identify the ornament, then follow the documented power
instructions.
