“Magic” does not describe one universal Hallmark power system. Depending on the ornament and its year, a Hallmark Keepsake ornament may use replaceable batteries, plug into a traditional miniature incandescent light string, require a Hallmark Legacy Cord, connect to a Magic Cord, connect to a Keepsake Power Cord, or include its own adapter.
The safest rule is simple: identify the exact ornament and follow the power instructions printed on its box or in its instructions. Never force a connector, substitute a cord because it looks similar, or assume that two Magic ornaments use the same system.

Battery-operated Hallmark ornaments
Battery-operated ornaments are self-contained: they do not connect to a tree light string or Hallmark power cord. Common sizes include LR44, LR43, LR41, CR2032 and standard AAA or AA batteries. The quantity matters just as much as the size.
Remove batteries before long-term storage. Old batteries can leak and damage contacts, wiring and plastic. Hallmark ornaments are not sold with a promise that decades-old batteries remain safe or usable, and replacement batteries should always match the type and voltage listed for the ornament.
Traditional miniature light strings: 1983–2009
Many older Magic ornaments use a small pigtail connector that replaces one bulb in a traditional, non-LED miniature Christmas light string. These ornaments were engineered for the electrical characteristics of incandescent miniature lights.
Never plug one of these ornaments into an LED light string. LED strings use different electronics, voltage arrangements and socket designs. A socket that appears to fit is not proof of electrical compatibility. Use a compatible non-LED miniature incandescent light string or the Hallmark Legacy Cord.
Some ornaments use a light-string bulb only to illuminate a feature through a rubber grommet while batteries operate the sound. That is different from an ornament whose pigtail plug draws power from the string, so read the individual instructions carefully.
The Hallmark Legacy Cord
The Hallmark Legacy Cord lets collectors power compatible older light-string ornaments from a wall outlet without removing bulbs from an incandescent tree-light string. It powers up to four compatible ornaments and was designed for older plug-in Magic ornaments from the pre-2010 era.
Legacy Cords cannot be connected to one another. Each cord requires its own electrical outlet. The grey-box and red-box versions contain the same type of cord; the packaging year and color differ.
The Hallmark Magic Cord: 2010–2017
The Magic Cord introduced a coordinated system for compatible ornaments. A cord can power up to seven Magic Cord ornaments, or six ornaments and a compatible tree topper. Some ornaments remain continuously lit; pressing a button on a lead ornament can trigger synchronized light-and-sound performances across the connected group.
A Magic Cord is not a Legacy Cord and is not interchangeable with the newer Keepsake Power Cord. The ornament’s box should specifically say “Magic Cord.”
The Keepsake Power Cord: 2017–present
The Keepsake Power Cord powers up to seven compatible Keepsake Power Cord ornaments, including interactive Storytellers collections. It plugs into a standard wall outlet and supplies continuous power so compatible ornaments can coordinate light and sound.
Do not identify the system by year alone. The transition around 2017 created overlap, and many ornaments from any year are battery-operated or unpowered. Match the words and connector shown on the actual ornament and box.
Quick troubleshooting checklist
- Confirm the product code and exact title.
- Read the box and instructions for the named battery or cord.
- Inspect connectors and battery contacts for corrosion or damage.
- Install fresh batteries in the correct direction, or connect only the specified Hallmark cord.
- For older pigtail ornaments, use a compatible non-LED miniature incandescent light string or Legacy Cord—never an LED string.
- Do not exceed the cord’s supported number of ornaments.
- Never force a connector or splice an ornament cord.
